Some of our principal activities on the service side were the Thanksgiving Chapel, the war bond drive, favors for Crile Hospital, the Easter Chapel, and our special assembly. Then on the more frivolous side were the Sadie Hawkins Dance, the Christmas formal, and the annual Sweetheart Dance.

1960 Whisperer — W.H.S. initiates Cross-Country Team. The little men you see pictured above with the big coach constitute a new addition to our athletic department. Cross-country, organized this year under the direction of Mr. Hershberger, is an up-and-coming sport at W.H.S. These boys work out after school and then on the day of a meet go for a nice long run about the countryside. This, the first season in 1960, proved to be rather rugged; but these pioneers have inauguarated a new activity, and we hope that it will become a big sport at W.H.S.

Pictured are: Mr. Hershberger (coach), Dan Demiter, Charles Leatherman, Jochen Kindling, Lemue Green, Car Lieberth, Joel Kinney, Jim Wood, George Halliwell, Dennis Rosenberg, and Bill Becker

The work of F.B.L.A., supervised by Mrs. Mast and Mrs. Bentler, began with offering the service of a secretary for every teacher. In the following year, an additional fifteen percent were selected. Scholarship, character, leadership, and service are qualities that a member of the National Honor Society should show. It is a desired honor and privilege to belong to this organization.

Western Star

Mike McMennamin, Lynn Doyle, and Rick Bruce, chosen by their classmates, travelled to Cincinnati to attend the annual World Affairs Institute. The lectures and panel discussions, along with the many social activities, highlighted this not-soon-to-be-forgotten weekend. The group was sponsored by the Rotary Club.

Harry Wirath first came to Wadsworth in 1944 to manage the Isaly’s store (where Domino’s Pizza is now). The store had been opened in 1934 in the former Klein’s Clothing room. In 1959, he bought the store, and when Isaly’s products were no longer available, he put his own name on the business. For about 12 years, the “breakfast club” (a regular group of business and professional men) served the customers, one day a year. The 1989 crew included John Hanna, Harry Wierath, Duane Kreider, Pete Giacomo, Bruce Clevidence, Sam Paulo, and Dick Wheatley.
